Scoring Constructed Response Items

This how-to article for teachers outlines the steps for scoring constructed responses from students.

Recent Activities

If there are constructed response items that need scored, you will see a message that indicates as such on your home Dashboard tab in Recent Activities. Select the link to go directly to score the items.

Class Gradebook Report

Or, you may go to the Insight Class Gradebook Report under the Reports tab.


Locate the Class Gradebook Report and select the Students icon in the Launch column to open the report.


Report Parameters

You will need to select the parameters for you Class Gradebook Report.

  1. Select your class parameters from the drop-down filters.

  2. Select the GO button.

  3. The Insight assessments will populate. If the assessment has a Scoring icon, then it has constructed response items that need to be scored.


    This icon will not appear if there are no constructed response items or all have been scored. Place a check next the assessment.

  4. Select Generate Report.

Scoring Tests

You will see a score for each student who has completed the test. A preliminary score is generated for all items the system scores automatically. If you see a student with a Scoring icon next to the score, then you will know that there is at least one constructed response item. Select the Score icon at the top of the assessment column.

If you select the Score icon at the top of the test column you will see a grid with each student’s name. Select the student’s name.


Teacher Grading

At the next screen you will see the question along with the student’s answer. Select the Sample Responses tab to see the exemplar.

Student Answer

The student answer tab displays the student's answer.

Sample Responses

Selecting the Sample Responses tab will display sample answers to the question.

Scoring Rubric

Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Rubric and the field where you will input the score.

You will also see a place where you can enter feedback on the student’s answer.

  1. Enter any feedback and select SEND (optional).

  2. View the rubric.

  3. Enter a score.

Select Another Student

Scroll back to the top of the page and use the drop-down to choose the next student OR select Back and the score will automatically save.

Return to Gradebook

Once all the student’s responses have been scored, select Back to return to the Grade Book.

You will now find that the student’s no longer have the score icon next to their score. The completed score for the assessment has been generated.
