Overview

Learn how to create and customize an assignment for your students in Perfection Next.

Note:

Which of the options below you see depends on your school's licensed products.

Prerequisites:

You must have a class with a licensed product and students assigned to the class to create an assignment.

Three Ways to Start an Assignment

There are three entry points for creating an assignment, and all three lead to the same Create Assignment page:

  • Option 1 — From Program Overview: Go to the product's Table of Contents (Program Overview), find the unit and lesson you want to assign, and select Assign from the actions menu next to it.

  • Option 2 — From inside a lesson: While viewing any lesson directly (Read, Discuss, Demonstrate, or Check tabs), use the Assign button in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This is a shortcut for when you're already working in the lesson and don't want to navigate back to the Table of Contents.

  • Option 3 — From the Assessment Library: Go to Products > Instructional Material, select the product, and choose Assessment Library from its Products list. Find the assessment you want to assign and select Assign to Class from the Actions menu next to it.

Finding a Lesson to Assign (Option 1)

Once your classes are set up, and your products and students have been added to those classes, you can start creating assignments.

  1. Select a product from your Dashboard's Products list.

  2. This takes you to the product's Program Overview. If you have multiple periods or classes, switch between them using the class dropdown.

  3. Select a chapter (or "Show more detail") to see more about it, including its genre, Lexile level, and pacing, along with its own Instructional Materials table.

  4. Once you've located the lesson you want to assign, select Assign in the Action column (or the actions drop-down menu, depending on the row). This opens the Create Assignment page.

Directly From a Lesson (Option 2)

While viewing a lesson, use the Table of Contents dropdown in the top navigation to jump to any other unit or section without leaving the lesson.

Or, to assign the lesson you're currently viewing, use the Assign button in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

From the Assessment Library (Option 3)

In addition to assigning lessons, you can assign a pre-built assessment (a formative quiz or summative practice exam) straight from the Assessment Library.

  1. Go to Products > Instructional Material.

  2. Select the Program and the product, then choose Assessment Library from that product's Products list (it's listed alongside Interactive Edition).

  3. Find the assessment you want to assign, then select Actions > Assign to Class next to it.

This opens the same Create Assignment page described below, pre-filled with that assessment instead of a lesson.

The Create Assignment Page

Assignment Name
Pre-filled with the lesson you selected (shown here with its unit and chapter, e.g. "Preview Concepts from Unit 1, Chapter 1") so you can confirm you've chosen the right one.

Directions (optional)
Add specific instructions for students, such as "Today's Do Now" or "Bellringer on Tuesday." Anything entered here displays to students when they open the assignment.

Sub-Lessons
Many lessons are broken into multiple components (for example: Read, Discuss, Word Study, Demonstrate, Check — the exact list depends on the lesson). All sub-lessons are checked by default. Uncheck any you don't want to include — for example, if students will read the lesson in their print book but you only want them completing the practice questions online, uncheck everything except the practice component.

Assign To
Choose multiple classes, an entire class, a group within a class, or individual students. If you teach the same content across multiple periods, you can assign to all of them at once here.

Start Date / Due Date
Set when the assignment becomes available to students and when it's due, including specific times. Select the calendar icon, confirm the start date is underlined in blue, choose the date and time, then do the same for the due date, and select OK.

Enable Grace Period for this assignment
Optional. Allows students to submit for a grade after the due date has passed, for students who missed class. Once the grace period itself has passed, submission is no longer allowed. Outside of a grace period, students can only complete the assignment between the start and due/end dates.

Restrict access to assignment to weekdays
Optional. Limits student access to the assignment to Monday through Friday, even if the start/due window spans a weekend. Available on assignments created from the Assessment Library (Option 3).

Show questions in randomized order to each student
Optional. Presents each student's questions in a different order, to reduce copying between students. Available on assignments created from the Assessment Library (Option 3).

Allow students to review answers (optional)
Choose when students can see their results: after the due date/time, after the end date/time, after the assignment is graded for all students, or as individual student assignments are graded.

Record in gradebook as
Categorize the assignment for your own organizational purposes (e.g., Practice). All categories are graded the same way — this only affects how it's labeled in the gradebook.

Once all selections are made, select Save at the bottom of the page to create the assignment. You can assign lessons daily, weekly, or monthly — whatever fits your schedule.

Back on your Dashboard, the assignment will appear at the top for you, and on the To Do list for your students, under Today's Assignments or Upcoming Assignments.

🎉 That's it — your assignment is ready to go!
